With the Easter weekend also including the ANZAC Day holiday, we went on a five-day, four-night hike under the leadership of Bob Oxlade. Bob organises great 'pack carry' hikes for Melbourne Bushwalkers, so we had a group of 15. This included 4 people doing their first multi-night hike.
We drove down to Port Fairy on Thursday afternoon, and spent the night there. Others were camping in the rain; Susan and I wimped out to stay in a cabin. We did appreciate being warm, and keeping our tent dry.
The first day's hiking started on the Glenelg river, at Keegan Bend. We walked 12 km downstream to the Post and Rail Camp through temperate rainforest. Leaches were a dominant species, so I never saw so much blood on a hike. Everyone had bloodstains on some part of their clothing.
Our first night's camping was comforted by a fire, and marred by the need to dodge leaches. Luckily the rain held off until were in their tents.
